Born from an Unexpected Experiment

Some of my favorite apothecary preparations begin with a problem that needs solving.

Hive Powder began with my dog.

I was experimenting with a simple botanical powder to comfort the itchy, irritated areas she occasionally develops. I wanted something dry rather than oily, gentle enough for sensitive skin, and made from a handful of purposeful ingredients.

The resulting blend combined three of my favorite natural materials: Frankincense resin, colloidal oatmeal and kaolin clay.

Then one day, while dealing with an intensely itchy patch of my own skin, curiosity got the better of me.

I tried the powder myself.

The sensation was wonderfully soothing—and Hive Powder quickly went from something created for my dog to something I wanted in my own apothecary cabinet.

The Ingredients

Hive Powder contains just three simple ingredients, each chosen with intention.

Frankincense Resin (Boswellia)

Whole Frankincense resin tears are ground by hand with a mortar and pestle into a fine aromatic powder. Rather than using an essential oil, this preparation incorporates the actual resin itself, preserving the beautiful character of the raw botanical material.

Colloidal Oatmeal

Finely milled oatmeal has long been prized in skin care for its ability to soothe, condition and protect dry, itchy and irritated skin.

Kaolin Clay

A gentle mineral clay that helps absorb excess moisture while giving Hive Powder its soft, silky texture and helping the powder remain comfortably on the skin.

A Little Texture Is Part of the Experience

Because I grind real Frankincense tears rather than using only an extracted oil, Hive Powder isn’t completely silky-smooth.

There is a very fine natural grit from the resin.

And surprisingly, I love it.

When gently worked over an itchy area, that subtle texture creates an almost irresistible little scratching sensation while the powder settles onto the skin.

Don’t scrub—just gently massage, press or pat it where your skin is asking for attention.

The Ritual of Use

Sprinkle a small amount into clean, dry hands or directly onto the desired area and gently massage or press into the skin.

A little goes a surprisingly long way.

The 5 g travel bottle is intentionally small enough to tuck into a handbag, travel kit or apothecary pouch, making it easy to keep Hive Powder nearby whenever your skin decides to become demanding.

Handcrafted in Small Batches

Every batch of Hive Powder begins with whole Frankincense resin tears that I grind by hand in a mortar and pestle before blending them with colloidal oatmeal and kaolin clay.

Because I work with genuine botanical materials rather than standardized synthetic ingredients, subtle differences in aroma, color and texture from one batch to another are completely natural.

That is part of the beauty of an artisan apothecary.

Hive Powder is intended for external cosmetic skin care and to soothe and comfort dry, itchy or irritated skin. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent allergies, hives, infections or other medical conditions.

For external use only. Avoid inhaling the powder and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. Patch test before first use and discontinue use if irritation occurs. Do not apply to broken or severely irritated skin. Seek appropriate medical care for persistent or severe skin reactions.
