The Salve

There is something remarkable about pine resin.

When a pine tree is wounded, it produces resin as part of its own natural defense. Thick, fragrant and golden when fresh, this extraordinary substance has also been gathered and used by people for generations as a traditional botanical remedy.

Pine resin has a long history of topical use for the skin, including on minor cuts, scrapes, irritated skin and other everyday skin concerns. Traditional herbal practice has particularly valued pine for its cleansing, soothing and protective qualities. Pine itself has been described as possessing antiseptic, antimicrobial, antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties.

Historically, pine resin has been applied topically to cuts and wounds as well as a wide range of other skin conditions, making the humble pine salve something of a traditional herbalist’s multipurpose preparation.

It is one of those simple preparations I find myself reaching for again and again.

From Tree to Apothecary

The resin in this salve doesn’t arrive at my apothecary in a bottle or package.

I gather it myself.

Each batch begins with resin personally and respectfully harvested from Longleaf Pine (Pinus palustris) trees growing near my home in Florida. I collect naturally exuded resin rather than deliberately wounding the tree, taking only what I need and leaving plenty behind.

Back in the apothecary, the raw resin is gently infused into olive oil, allowing the resinous constituents to slowly move into the oil before the infusion is transformed into a rich, protective salve.

It is a slow process, but that is part of the point.

This is botanical medicine in its oldest form: tree, resin, oil, time and the hands of the maker.

A Traditional Apothecary Staple

Pine has been valued medicinally and spiritually by cultures throughout history. Its needles and resin have traditionally been used for everything from respiratory preparations to topical applications, while pine incense has been associated with protection, strength, longevity and wisdom.

For the skin, pine resin has traditionally been used on cuts, wounds, acne, eczema, psoriasis and inflammatory or rheumatic complaints.

I personally keep Pine Resin Salve close at hand for life’s little skin mishaps—dry or cracked skin, minor cuts and scrapes, irritated spots, and other occasions when the skin could use some extra care.

The Ritual of Use

Warm a small amount between clean fingertips and gently massage it into the desired area.

The salve melts against the warmth of the body, leaving behind a protective layer and the unmistakable aroma of real pine resin—fresh, balsamic, woody and deeply coniferous.

Use it on hands, knuckles, elbows and heels as a rich botanical moisturizer, or keep the jar in your home apothecary for those little moments when you instinctively find yourself reaching for a salve.

Small Batch & Wild Harvested

Because this salve begins with resin gathered directly from living trees, no two batches will ever be exactly alike.

The color, aroma and texture of the resin naturally change with the tree, season and environment. These variations aren’t imperfections to be standardized away—they are part of the character of working with real botanical materials.

Each jar is prepared by hand in small artisan batches from resin gathered, infused and crafted by me.

From the tree to the apothecary to you.
